Several years ago, I ran a 6 week program at the local Rec Center, and at the start and end, I would take a client's stats.
On this day, one client hopped on the scale, put her hands over her eyes and proclaimed, "I don't want to know the number."
OK, I thought. Never had this before, but I went with it. I recorded her weight: it was 206 lbs.
We went about our training and nutrition lessons, and she showed for every class.
Then the final day came, and it was weight in time...again, she stepped on the scale and covered her eyes. "I don't want to know," she said. "Ever?," I asked. "Nope," was all she said.
Her weight that day: 206 lbs.
What was going on here? I don't really know. She never talked about it, but my guess is that she has carried this fear mindset for a very long time.
Fear. That is what stands in the way of most women's body / fitness / health success, because we are taught that there is so much shame around ageing bodies, extra weight, and so on.
But once I can teach a woman that on the other side of fear is a whole other world, of freedom, joy and purpose, of health and wellness, then fear simply becomes a messenger that says "you're heading into change, and change is good. It's what you wanted, right?"
But this is the crossroads moment for many women, to either step through the fear (which is only momentary) and begin to craft a new way of thinking, new habits, fresh perspectives. But without proper coaching, this ability to 'transcend' out of the comfort zone - and stay there - rarely happens when they settle on that one-off YouTube video, or anther diet plan, or that 6-week BeachBody program.
And so they return to the beginning, without any real change, or growth of any kind, repeating the same pattern and circling the drain once again in another 'melt the fat in 6 weeks' fitness program that may offer temporary motivation and some results, but that melt away in time...again...
