This is what I
often ask women who say they want to change the course of ageing: to lose the weight, to stop emotional eating and self sabotage, to learn how to eat and move for their age, and to step into their best body and life.
And yet when they begin to say ‘yes’ to the
possibility, they often run back to their comfort zone. They contract. Close down. It can happen even with the best intentions. Why?
Because fear is a very real thing in this thing
called change. But staying in our comfort zone means we are saying yes to being unhealthy, depressed, overweight, perhaps angry and frustrated, and continuing to live in a body and a life that we cannot stand anymore.
There is comfort in the known, even when it is
unhealthy.
This is where women often 'get used to' the physical and emotional pain they are living in. Although they wish to change, the fear of moving forward into the unknown scares them, and this fear builds. So
they start finding excuses to not change: it's a money issue, or lack of time...'just not right now, I'll get back to you", or 'we have holidays coming up, can I get back to you when we get back from our holiday?' It takes the pressure off of having to commit.
But nothing changes. She is contracting right back
into the very thinking habits that have kept her away from any real change or results, for years. She is standing in her own way, really.
It can be a fear of taking responsibility. Or a
fear of failure, even a fear of success. Fear of challenging or outgrowing a relationship. Fear of looking too good. A fear of standing out.
I can even have a woman on the brink of change, as
we build a vision of what is possible for her body, her health, and her life. This is a very powerful exercise, but this is where some women shuffling their feet...energetically speaking. It’s like they’re afraid to dream….
So ask yourself, how many summers do you have left
to enjoy your health, your body, your family, your life? What does this look and feel like?
And then decide if you are willing to live where you are right now, for even one more second, let alone another summer, in your body and health and life the way it is now for another year, another 5
years….
It’s all about making a decision: to decide to step into a New Way, or to decide to NOT do anything about it and stay where you are. This too is a choice.
But this will not fix itself.
