Today I received a message from a lady who was very distraught over a a family member's weight and health issues.
"I just don't know what to do for her. She's miserable," this lady said about her sister, who had gained 120 pounds in
the last two years (marital problems), and is sitting at an uncomfortable 250 pounds.
Her family is of course very concerned, but they are not sure how to approach her about getting help.
"Exactly who is your ideal client? Who do you help?" she asked? "I know you're into Healthy Ageing but do you help with extreme weight
problems or addiction issues?"
Its a great question, and at first, one might not think that I work with obesity, but here's what I told her:
Whether you're struggling with 20 pounds or 200 pounds, the same mechanisms are often at work: self sabotage, poor self esteem, fear and a whole bunch of other conscious and unconscious
things in there...
Hence the Beliefs Detox we spend a week doing, and continue to massage along the way when I take a client on.
That psychology piece, that 'Cognitive Restructuring' piece or mindset work, is vitally important in everything that I do.
I shared a bit of my experience (because no, I haven't had huge weight issues, but in the past I had drug and alcohol and bad boys addications! LOL!).
The same inner workings are at work here, in this poor lady.
Because we know that how we are living and what we are doing isn't healthy, but we feel
powerless to stop it.
I remember that feeling well...
So let's just pause right here...what is that 'thing' standing in our way?
It's not lack of time, or resources or money really (that's usually the first objection, but if we want it bad enough, we can
find a way).
It's the fear that keeps us stuck in the mud.
Many of us think 'I'm not motivated' or "I have no willpower".
Yeah you do. You've raised a family, carved out a career or built a
business.
You handle grown up stuff like rent and mortgages and paying the bills. So you ARE motivated, right?
You're just not motivated in this area because perhaps getting lean and healthy might feel like 'work' or 'no fun' or 'it's gonna be hard'....do any of these thoughts
resonate?
These are the Pain versus Pleasure things we coach through.
And they're just beliefs, hand-me-downs from the thousands of people out there, millions, that all cry about the same thing...it's gonna be hard, terrible, I'll have no fun.
Really?
It's all about the meaning you are giving to something, your story, really.... Time to change it up.
Ask any of my clients who have transformed their bodies and health and they will tell you they LOVE how they look and feel.
And they wish they had of known how to do it the right way, the sustainable way, years ago.
So many years lost trying...
And yes, it was work at times.
And yes, they struggled at times (that's when a solid strategy and coaching is
necessary) but they kept their eye on the ball and eventually they began to live with new habits, and enjoying a rockin' body, living lean, joyful, confident, strong!
Ordinary women making it Work.
You gotta want to make yourself PROUD. THAT'S the Key!
Claiming your Destiny (only YOU can claim that!)
So back to this lady who was in tears over her sister's weight issues and such....this HAS to be her sister coming forward.
You can support a family member unless she is truly ready to change....otherwise she will stay living in this horrible loop of
hers.
She's stuck in her head.
She's standing in her own way.
Sadly, often our best intentions as family members aren't enough.
The only thing I could add was 'send
her my way, I'll spend some time talking to her, no problem. See if I can help."
I truly hope she picks up the phone...
There is ALWAYS hope.
Fingers crossed, here....
Karen
