Last week I did a Body Breakthrough Startegy call with a woman wanting to build nice shape and tone, and to get in control of her night time bingeing
habit.
I always make sure I get background info on the caller's past exercise experience, diet history, lifestyle etc.
This woman was clearly stuck, having been training at the gym for over a year, with little results.
And then she said something I hear all
too often...
She was a competitor, and I didn't think her food plan for me was right.
She laid out how she was expected to eat, and guess what I found....
You got it. This former-competitor-now-coach was putting her women on that good old
competitor's standby diet of skinless chicken, asparagus, broccoli and protein powder.
Yuck!
I competed over a 23 year span, and while I learned a TON in those years, what I never did was put my clients on my training or food program.
It's simply not
realistic and most certainly not a long term, sustainable food plan that is suited for the 40+ woman.
And just because that 'coach' looks fantastic and has all her lovely show pics up everywhere...(another stick in my side...a lot of competitors are not seasoned coaches...it's a skillset that takes years to develop and most certainly certification helps) doesn't mean you should do as she
does.
In fact, you probably shouldn't.
And she should know that.
Now before I get a bunch of emails from some ticked off competitors, there are many great competitors-turned-coaches who learn the craft and who treat their clients like real people with real
lives and real expectations.
I like to call myself a Lifestyle Athlete, meaning, I take some things from my many years in the competitive trenches, and sprinkle some common sense in there and make it an appropriate lifestyle for myself, and my 40+ women I coach.
So consider who you are choosing as your trainer or coach this January
ladies. I would suggest not just looking at her body for proof, but look at the bodies and lives of the women she has been coaching.
because therein lies the truth.
And ask yourself: can I continue to eat and train this way for the next 30 years?
If not, move down the
line and find someone you click with, who walks the walk, who is your age and who has a track record of helping women into their best bodies with no nonsense stuff.
Let's leave the skinless chicken and broccoli to the competitors out there.
Peace out,
Karen
