At some point, we all have to accept ageing. This was one of my biggest challenges...
Ageing matters. It changes our bodies, our recovery, our sleep (right, ladies??), our tendons and ligaments, how much volume we can use...how our body responds to food,
calories...oh yeah....!
I hear women say it's 'just a number' and while I appreciate and understand this, what I think they mean is that you can start at any age.
This I agree with.
But things change. I've lived through 6 decades of seeing my body change, and working to stay fit, lean and strong through them all. And for certain, the strategy MUST
change as we age.
This is what has changed for me:
- I train 4-5 days a week. The days of working 6 days a week (we are talking specifically weight lifting) is gone. I fought with this, but I have learned to accept it.
- I never train to failure. If I do, I take days to recover, and it invites joint challenges.
These days, I am all about protecting my joints. they need to support me for another 40 years on this planet.
- I no longer compare myself to others, especially the younger gals. Oh how I want to be 'back' there! But I do watch women my age (those long time bodybuilders from way back....the 80's and 90's like Cory, Lenda Murray, Rachel, Sharon Bruneau, Ava), to see how they move forward, and all these Lifestyle Athletes have maintained
their health and their beautiful bodies.
- I mange my food now more than ever. The body is less forgiving as you age, for sure, and we DO become more sedentary as we age (this was a tough one for me to accept...but we DO sit more...watching Netflix, sit poolside with a good book instead of playing volleyball, right?
- I really need to manage my sleep. I am in bed for 10
hours in hope of getting 8 hours of sleep. It is very interrupted (I do my best thinking at night. LOL!). I don't fret about it...and I don't take any sleep aids, I just work my life around it.
- I have minimized my supplements, but I still take my classic 5 or 6. I still take my training supplements too.
- I do treatments for my body regularly - massage, chiro,
physio, accupuncture.
I take epsom baths every night.
- I stretch (yoga-ish) every day. Every. Day. I neglected it for too many years. There are times when that causes trouble too though...my body is WAY more sensitive to pain than it used to me.
- I cry.
A lot.
- I work on mindset every day. It is the best thing that I have learned and is what I teach all my clients. Your beliefs and self identity, sense of worthiness runs the show. Learn to manage and strengthen these, and you've won the Day!
- I go down the rabbit hole
like everyone else at times. And THIS is when I am forced to draw on everything I know and teach (us coaches are always in the trenches of our own work), and I try not to beat myself up about it (yes, I've spent a lifetime of beating myself up...Miss Perfectionist here).
- I have spent TONS on Personal Growth courses over the years. Probably close to 200K. I am addicted to growth and learning. I regret NONE of it because I
am an avid learner in this life. It makes me feel good, connected, abundant and joyful.
Yes, I write long posts! I LOVE writing! I'm one of those weirdos that can't wait to get up and write something...it's my creative outlet.
