DO YOU LOVE YOUR CARBS!!?
If you are struggling with excess weight or cravings, loot at your CARBS.
This week in my monthly Warrior Woman Program, we are looking at carbs through a microscope, and really trying to slay that dragon once and for all. The input and discussion is quite enlightening, I must say!
How many carbs do YOU need?
It depends. These days, there's all the focus on 'eating higher carb to 'uild more muscle' and 'increase your metabolism'. This is great, but carb-eater beware: we are NOT all created equal.
For me, I have experimented with carb amounts for years, in my
own training and goals, and as a coach and Sports Nutritionist (Master level), AND as a 50+ woman, I can tell you that carb tolerance varies A LOT! What is low carb to one person may not be to another.
"Just add 20 grams of carbs a week for so many weeks and you will increase your carb threshold, and your results will BLOSSOM." Not so fast. When I applied this common method, it only made me FAT and
GROGGY. Sure, I gained muscle, but how much of it was because of training HARD and how much was from added carbs? I'll lay bets on my hard work first.
See, when we hear of someone getting shredded even when they eat 200 grams of carbs a day (in my dreams, I WISH!), that person has the genetic potential to do so. Or they are BIGGER people (by bigger, it could mean lean tissue aka muscle or just, well, bigger, taller, more bone, more body
to fuel. Us small gals, like under 5'2" just don't get to eat that much). Or they are YOUNGER (yep, things slow down with time!).
With my clients, they learn to Learn about THEIR body and tolerance. It's sooo important!
So here's a few tips:
1) Clean up your carb intake (if
you're always awash in carbs or 'other' foods, you can't really clearly hear your body's true needs).
2) LEARN about carb values and portions and how much you are eating on average each day (yes, you have to do some work here!)
3) Experiment...a LOT! Personal experience, where you apply, test, re-apply... time and time again, will ALWAYS trump science.
