Would You Help Her...?

Published: Tue, 08/16/16

Here's a scenario...you see a woman in the gym, lifting weights, but she is doing it incorrectly.'

Would you walk over and show her how to do it correctly, or would you stick with your own training?

In our Monday Mastermind discussion on our private Facebook page, this was this week's topic. And the answers were varied..

"Yes, or course! She needs help! She may hurt herself"
"Nope, it's her responsibility, really."
"I'd let the gym staff know."
"I'd say something only if I knew it was truly dangerous, otherwise, most people don't like the intrusion.

Where do I sit with all of this?

Here's what I say: if she's truly in danger of hurting herself (like with squatting, because let's face it, she won't exactly hurt herself by doing a bicep curl..), then I would let her know that she needs in invest in a trainer to show her. I wouldn't necessarily tell the gym staff because many of them are not trained in such areas (many are just in a supervisory role and really can't spot or teach a squat, for example), and that would be tattle tale-ing, really. And there are TONS of people doing the work incorrectly.

Problem is, most people don't want to hire a trainer because of the cost, OR they want to do it themselves. This is human nature, and I'm not about to change it. And my time is precious too, VERY precious, and I could be there all day correcting technique. That's why trainers are there..to invest in. But again, many trainers are NOT taught, nor have the level of experience, to be able to walk someone thoroughly through a squat, but a cable row, a press, a sit up, alright then.

That's why in my programs, you have access to hundreds of videos where I show you quickly, the technique of the lift, and why we do it. It's important that you 'see' it in action, from a valued source, a qualified trainer. I do this with all my programs, so that you can see and 'feel' the movement for real.

It's not what you lift, it's how (and how often) you lift.

So if you see someone moving incorrectly, let them know that you can see how much effort they are putting in, and it would be nice for them to get the benefit of their training by doing the movement to its fullest.

Then move on to your own workout! We have much work to do on ourselves, yes?
