Hey ,
Several years ago, I had to take a restraining order out against a vegan.
Yes, really!
I had done a blog on a female client of mine who was also a hunter, and while I don't like or condone hunting, her strength, focus, and determination - plus the fact that she fed her family all year with her hunts - was amazing. I am all about supporting others in
their dreams, and their passions. Who am I to be judge and jury?
Then the emails started coming in from D..... "You promote the useless slaughter of mother and father animals..." " what a disgusting display of evil...." "you are sending a message of death on to your female patrons, you are no leader.." On and on he went.
So I contacted the local Sidney police department, opened a file, and let him know. Mr Vegan never contacted me again.
Guess he found greener pastures somewhere else (pardon the pun!)
It's kind of funny, how some people aren't at peace unless you subscribe to their way of thinking or living, as if they have it right, and you do not.
I'm all about freedom, and I have always believed that the biggest gift we have is the gift of choice. So in all my programming, it doesn't matter to me if you are vegan, carnivore, ovo vegetarian, prescatarian,
herbivore, omnivore,whatever-avore...
Seriously. We are all different, and we all have different beliefs, need and tastes. Basic rules of good stewardship, and eating chemical free are what I promote (I don't think you can argue with that), but after that, it's up to the client. I am here as a guide and a support person, and to teach what I know. The rest is up to them.
In the world of fitness and healthy eating, there are 'guru's' out there that
often think that their way is the only WAY, the best way. Usually, this is a result of being 'new' to the industry, and taking on some 'cool' thing that is the latest and greatest trend, and trends, are, well, trendy. But in my view if everyone is doing it, that's a reason for me NOT to do it.
I eat dairy. I eat gluten. I love milk chocolate (not dark..yuck!). I eat the skin on my chicken breast. I love Nutella. And I love red wine, ANY red wine, and I drink some
every week.
I'm even known to steal a few macaroons from the bulk bin at Thrifty's when I cruise on through to do my shopping. (Shhhh!)
As a coach, I say teach what you know, to the best of your ability. Stay well rounded and open, and you will help clients in the best way possible. Leave your beliefs, and your preaching, at home. Honour people where they are at, NOT where you think they SHOULD be (and you may want to check out your own reasons
for being self righteous...there's always work to be done at home).
Rock on!
