Consider this quote from Web MD...Cardio versus Weight Training.
"The primary treatment for sarcopenia I(muscle loss) s exercise. Specifically, resistance training or strength training – exercise that increases muscle strength and endurance
with weights or resistance bands – has been shown to be useful for both the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia.Resistance training has been reported to positively influence the neuromuscular system, hormone concentrations, and protein synthesis rate.”
"Conversely, overdoing aerobic training can actually enhance the negative effects of sarcopenia as
branch chain amino acids get sacrificed from the muscle tissue and are used for energy. This can have a resulting effect of further slowing down metabolism as well. Bodypart, traditional bodybuilding/innervation training makes the best sense for training for a physique over 50 as you enter membership into the platinum club. It’s just the easiest and safest way to keep metabolically active tissue – metabolically active."
The body will
always, ALWAYS spare fat with cardio work. Hence, why after years of running, my bodyshape didn't change, and my metabolism started to slow down (metabolic compensation...it was slowing down because it HAD to to conserve fat, AND I was losing muscle with all the running). This is often why I see the higher amounts of bodyfat (25-30%) on runners and endurance athletes, although they may weight less than their counterparts. It always surprises them, and their answer is to run MORE!
NO!
People often critique me for being anti-cardio. I'm not anti cardio, I'm pro-weights. Keep your cardio, but major in weights IF you want a strong metabolism, to diffuse the results of hormonal havoc, and you want to be STRONG, shapely, have strong bones, healthy joints, and you want to enjoy your food (rather than continue to cut it down!). I've lived through it all for 4 decades now: cardio and
no weight, then adding in 'a bit of weights afterward', then finally tipping the scale to major in weights and minor in cardio...BIG difference to my physique, recovery, shape and metabolism. I'm a lifer, for sure! I've been using my body as the ultimate experiment (there still isn't a lot of info on women, aging and weight training, so think I'll write a book!).
I've seen the effects of all diet and training strategies on my body for 35+ years now. No
outdated science or men in white lab coats needed...I've walked the walk, and I've assessed, reassessed, applied, reapplied with the variables for years. For me, Flexible eating and weight training is IT (with an 80/20 split between weights and MET-based cardio work). It's my HYBRID training method that I teach ALL my clients. You'll notice them too, in gyms everywhere, not training the norm, but looking awesome, I must say!
