Guilt cardio - NO!

I recently received this query from a female fitness fan....


"Hi Karen. I have a quick question: whenever I blow my diet I do extra cardio the next day to make up for it. Is this ok?"   

Nope C, it's not ok. In fact, it's counterproductive to all you want to attain, I told her, which was a healthy metabolism, lean and shapely physique, and a stress free life.

I call this “guilt cardio.” And I see it in gyms everywhere...

For many women, 'fitness' has become all about the MATH! Why? Because it's easier, makes you feel 'safe'. you don't have to think, just do.
It's insanity really, to indulge in a muffin, then feel bad about it, and cardio it off. You spend 5 minutes enjoying the taste, and 30 minutes trying to work it off. Can you see the insanity in that? (And you really don't work it off...do you know it takes 12 30-minute bouts of cardio to train off 1 lb of fat? Sink your teeth into that for awhile...).

With this guilt cardio mindset, you are only setting yourself up for failure. You're moving backwards, really, and you're headed down that rabbit hole again...do you REALLY want to go there again? Haven't you had enough of it, ladies?

In my programs, we use as little cardio as possible, and keep our eating as full as possible. Think about that for a minute. Freedom, health, vitality, time off the diet clock...

But I gain weight without my app?" OK, now that's REALLY sad. Are you going to live with an app for 10, 20, 30 years?

"But my metabolism just shut off". No it didn't. You simply didn't keep your muscles shapely and your metabolism strong, and your fat-burning tools healthy with weight training (I'm not talking hiking, biking, walking). Sarcopenia naturally set in (muscle loss) as time added up. Then you likely added on years of cardio and low calorie diets along the way. You set the stage years ago, taught your body the wrong things, but it CAN be reversed!

My gals who have been on my Program for years, you'll know them when you see them...lean, shapely, always improving, confident, gracing gyms all over Vancouver Island (I've put through 656 lovely ladies, to be exact!). And oh yeah, they are in their 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. Age has no limit. The body is the body. The same training and eating principles apply (albeit a bit of shifting for us older gals!).

Let's have freedom ladies, let's have time off the clock. Let's get our heads out of the 'fitness industry' and back in the health industry. Put away your apps, your Pinterest board showing all those lovely 6-pack ab shots, your Oxygen mag with its photo-shopped wonder ladies, and let's get real.
